Remarkable Symposium 2011 Exhibition – Conditions of Entry
Please read all conditions carefully and sign the acknowledgement on the entry form.
1. Entry to the exhibition is open to all quilters who are New Zealand Residents and who register for Remarkable Symposium 2011. Entry to the challenges is open to both NZ and overseas Symposium registrants. Entrants into Youth Categories (Next Generation up to 12 years and Next Generation 13-19 years) are not required to be registered for Remarkable Symposium 2011. All entries must be on the official entry form and received at P O Box 825, Queenstown 9348 by 14 January 2011.
2. For the purposes of this exhibition, a “quilt” is defined as a fabric sandwich comprising three layers held together with quilting stitches or tying. This rule does not apply to the Fibrelicious category.
3. A non-refundable entry fee applies: $15 for the first entry and $5 for each additional entry.
4. It is the responsibility of the entrant to obtain permission and pay any fee regarding the use of copyright material. Proof of this permission may be requested. For quilts started in a class the entrant must gain permission from the tutor for entry and a copy of this proof must be enclosed with the entry.
5. The quilt must be the entrant’s own work including piecing, quilting and binding and completed subsequent to Quilt Wellington Symposium 2009. Quilts entered into Youth Categories (Next Generation up to 12 years and Next Generation 13-19 years) must be the entrant’s own work, however the entrant may receive advice and oversight from an adult.
6. If a quilt is made by two or more quiltmakers, it should be entered under the group or collaborative category, and have at least one member registered for Remarkable Symposium 2011. Web Challenge quilts must be made by individual quiltmakers and this person must be registered for Remarkable Symposium 2011.
7. A commercially machine-quilted quilt must be entered under the Open Commercially Quilted category. The commercial quilter’s full business name must be included on the entry form, along with the entrant’s name. Two prizes will be awarded. One to a quiltmaker and another prize will be awarded to a commercial quilter. Each of these prizes will be judged on their own merits and may result in different quilts winning each of the awards.
8. Ages are determined as at 1 January 2011 for Next Generation up to 12 years and Next Generation 13-19 years.
9. See exhibition and challenge categories for specific size restrictions, but unless specified, maximum width and length is 240 x 240cm.
10. Submission of entry will be in both digital format and photograph. Please provide one CD per entry, containing one full view and one close up image of the quilt, saved in .jpg format 6” x 4” at 300 DPI. Please also provide two coloured photos per entry (full view). Label the CD cover, and back of photos to clearly show quilt title, maker/s name, size and top orientation. Label the actual CD with the quilt title and maker/s name. Photographs and CDs will not be returned.
11. CD’s and photos of accepted work will be retained for publicity and catalogue use and may be published in electronic or printed format for sale to the public. An exhibit may be photographed by the general public. This includes digital photography by textile related publications for articles, publicity and archival purposes.
12. Written acceptance of your work will be notified by either email or mail. If possible, please provide an email address for communication. Return instructions will also be enclosed. Acceptance of entry does not guarantee final selection. Accepted entries are to be addressed to Remarkable Symposium 2011 Exhibition, C/- 32 Amber Close, Arthur’s Point, Queenstown and received between 10-14 March 2011.
13. All accepted work must have a hanging sleeve of 10cm depth along the top back edge. Velcro attachment requirements: A strip of hook-sided Velcro must be firmly stitched to the back top edge of the quilt from binding to binding. For packaging purposes please attach labelled soft-sided Velcro to this also. Quilts of irregular shape/size must have adequate means of hanging, including hook-sided Velcro.
14. All accepted work must be labelled on the bottom quilt back, left hand corner (when viewed from the back). The label must contain the quilt title, the maker’s name, quilter’s name (if different from maker), address, phone number and the size of the quilt in metric. Quilts are to be presented in a labelled, closable cloth bag. Three dimensional work must be labelled similarly on the back or bottom.
15. Remarkable Symposium 2011 Inc, the organiser of Remarkable Symposium 2011 is not liable for any loss, damage or destruction of exhibition items however such loss, damage or destruction is caused, including any negligent act or omission, fault or cause. Insurance is the responsibility of the exhibitor at all times. This includes items selected for the New Zealand Quilter Small Quilt Suitcase travelling exhibition.
16. A 15% commission is required on all work sold throughout the exhibition. This is to be included in your selling price.
17. Selected entries will be subjected to a final selection before hanging. The Judges and Selectors reserve the right to reject any entry which does not comply with the conditions/criteria of entry. The judges reserve the right to move a quilt to another category. The Judges/Selectors reserve the right to split any category. The decisions of the selectors and judges are final and no correspondence will be entered into.
18. Any exhibitor entering a winning quilt as an “Amateur” and who is found to be of “Professional” status will forfeit the winning quilt’s award. A Professional Quilter is defined as someone who teaches or professionally publishes in the field of quilting and/or has won Best of Show or two first places (blue ribbons) in any major judged national or international competition or exhibition. Having exhibited as a professional, amateur status cannot be resumed.
19. Best of Show is acknowledged as the top award and precludes that particular entry from winning any further awards other than Viewers’ Choice.
20. To be awarded any of the Awards for Excellence in Quilting, both the quilt top and the quilting must be done by the same person.
21. The Judges reserve the right not to present an award if they see fit.
22. Sponsors of an award may request the award winning quilt be available to call upon for show or photography purposes for up to one year subsequent to the Exhibition.
23. The Suitcase Exhibition will be selected from throughout all categories. A quilt may be entered in any category but can be considered for the Suitcase Exhibition if it meets the following criteria: no larger than 125 x75; must be easily transportable i.e. must be able to be rolled or folded for suitcase travel; all rods, bars, or embellishments to be permanently fixed; quilts entered into Fibrelicious and ANZAC Banner Categories are not eligible. Quilts selected for this exhibition are expected to be available to travel for 12 months. Please indicate on the entry form if you wish your quilt to be considered.
